Design

With the native trees in the background and some overhanging, the idea of using some timber needed no questioning. This fitted well with the idea of simple earthy materials for the hard landscaping, to both contrast and compliment the various colours coming from the planting. The design needed to have well chosen and proportioned areas with appropriate level changes, and having found a good source, green oak timbers (in sleeper dimensions) where chosen to make retaining walls. In order to provide a non-slip surface in the wet shade I suggested a steel surface for the corner feature; a contrastingly industrial solution.

Local crushed sandstone provides the effect of a dry riverbed whilst allowing water to continue flowing as it always has done but without being a problem. Being a fairly large plot it represents a series of rooms, rather than just one, the seating and level changes indicating the start and finish of each. The lawn and rotunda are ‘rooms’ in themselves and the oak walkway is a connecting corridor between the most popular areas. Many native species and ornamental grasses allow the planting to integrate the garden with its’ natural surroundings. Even before the project was finished there was a very noticeable increase in visiting wildlife. Plants have been chosen to provide a constantly attractive but changing scene.

The Clients Verdict

“Choosing a garden designer is a very personal decision and one with consequences for the enjoyment of your whole home. Right from the first meeting, through the design process and into the implementation, we were always confident that we'd made the right choice. Barry took a very difficult and neglected space and has turned it into a beautiful garden. We're still delighted 2 years on. The garden just gets better each year.”
