A Roof Terrace

At only 3 by 7 meters this terrace is perhaps a good size area although not purpose built. The view includes the now open Spinnaker Tower. As it would have been expensive and inconvenient to inspect the roof structure the design needed to be self-supporting. My client brief was for something modern to provide an inviting entertainment space with a water feature. A handrail was needed from the outset.

Design

With the need for a hosepipe at the least, some in built seating providing storage was a great start for the design. The choice of cedar for the surface provides a long lasting but lightweight deck. The supporting structure was carefully designed, then checked by a structural engineer. Marine grade stainless steel provides a smart modern impression with various lights, containers etc. available. We looked at a few different ideas for water features and resin bound glass sculpture was chosen. The blue of the in built lighting, the colours in the water feature and the glass screen tone in with the Spinnaker Tower at night. Two curved beds in the corner of the terrace ‘round off’ the design with their custom-made capping.

The Clients Verdict

"A contemporary and innovative design that was completed with high quality materials that beautifully complement the traditional ecclesiastical Victorian architecture. The finished product is much better than I had ever envisaged when I decided to commence the project.”
